Courtney Stoddard

We have always said the Beverly Hills cosmetic plastic surgery community is actually a mid-city medical campus, with virtually every type Master Surgeon, specialist and super-specialist just across the street, next door or up two stories.

And so it was with Courtney Stodden’s recent nose surgery consisting of cosmetic rhinoplasty and functional breathing surgery.

Courtney came to fame at 16 by marrying then 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchison. Courtney cites Marilyn Monroe as her role model and has appeared on British TV, on American television in Couples Therapy, in rap videos, starred in her own music productions and does modeling.

So she – like any other actress — is very concerned with her appearance. For instance, Courtney increased her breast cup size from C to DD in June of 2013.

And so it was the now 21-year-old Courtney coming again to Beverly Hills to see her breast augmentation surgeon, Stuart Linder, M.D. While there, Courtney told Dr. Linder she was having breathing trouble, due to an extremely stuffy nose, “sinus” problems and wanted a new, better looking nose. But Dr. Linder only does body surgery so he sent her to us, a nose surgery super-specialist.

Thanks to the Beverly-Hills-as-a-medical-campus syndrome, our office is right across the street from Dr. Linder.

It didn’t take long to discover the source of Courtney’s breathing problems: a deviated septum. The septum is paper-thin, bone and cartilage partition sitting between the two nostrils; hers was bent into a breathing channel, blocking clear, easy breathing. It’s a very, very common condition. Some are born with it and some bend their septa in accidents.

(Read more about septoplasty, the deviated septum surgery.)

So our discussion turned to Courtney Stodden’s nose job procedure.

As luck would have it, it’s possible to do a cosmetic rhinoplasty (or nose job) during the same surgical session as deviated septum surgery.

(Read more about the nose job procedure.)

The combined procedure is known as a septorhinoplasty and took about two and one-quarter hours. Courtney’s nose also required some turbinate reduction surgery.

Courtney, now being a big fan of clear breathing, was also glad to see her nose would not be packed with cotton.

Time was, virtually all nose surgery patients had nasal packing.

It was a good practice because the packing could be soaked with medicines to promote healing and staunch bleeding, but it also meant mouth breathing for the patients, with many complaining nasal packing felt like a giant clothes pin clamped on the nose.

Some patients cancelled their nose job appointments if nasal packing was used, so many surgeons quit using the packing.

But now there’s a middle way: we wrap nasal packing around a soft silicone tube for each nostril to allow easy breathing and much more patient comfort.

Because it’s always been a tradition in medicine that new inventions are named after the doctor who invented the device or tool, we now have the Kotler Nasal Airway (KNA). You can see the KNA in Courtney’s nostrils while she’s in the recovery room.
